10 Garden Patio Design Ideas

Making a pillow case

1 Cut out a single piece of fabric for the case and stitch a double hem along each short edge.

2 Fold the fabric so the right sides are together and the flap extends 15cm (6in) past the end. Pin into position.

3 Turn the case over and fold the flap back so the folded edge aligns with the hemmed edge. Pin into position.

Old cottons and linens, once thoroughly washed, make beautiful pillow cases. Smart checks and stripes in cool colours can be added as borders, flaps or edgings.

Making a pillow case

Pillow cases should be made from cotton or poplin, or linen. For a pillow with a pocket to hold in the pillow, cut a single piece of fabric twice the length of the pillow plus a total of 20cm (8in) for the inside flap and for the double hem allowances, by the width of the pillow case, plus an extra 3cm (l’Ain) for seam allowances.

Along each short side, turn under and stitch a 1cm double (‘Ain) hem ( 340—341). Fold the fabric right sides together, the length of the pillow from one end, so that the flap extends 15cm (6in) past the doubled-over pillow case. Pin the raw edges together. Then turn the case over and fold the flap back on the case so that the folded edge aligns with the hemmed edge. Pin the raw edges of the flap to the other layers and tack. Remove the pins and machine stitch through all the layers 1.5cm (%in) from the edges. Pink the raw edges or zigzag stitch them and trim. Turn right side out. The flap will now be on the inside of the finished pillow case.
