The three-time All-Pro returned to the Giants for the second half of 1941, but he then went into the navy for the bulk of World War II. Danowski was named varsity football coach at Fordham in 1946 and continued there until the Rams gave up the sport in 1955. The Giants trailed Washington with a 4-2 record and were expected to be slowed by two key injuries. First, Pro Bowl wide receiver Del Shofner had injured his shoulder in Week 5 against the Steelers, and he had played sparingly in Week 6 against the Lions. Second, ace quarterback Y. A. Tittle hurt his arm against Detroit and hadn’t practiced all week. Knowing this, no one would have predicted what unfolded that day.

Tittle got off to a slow start, with six of his first seven passes falling incomplete. Things got worse after the Giants’ Johnny Counts muffed a punt and Redskins quarterback Norm Snead hit Bobby Mitchell for a 44-yard score on the next play. After the ensuing kickoff, New York finally got a drive going despite two holding penalties, and Tittle hit Joe Morrison for a 22-yard touchdown to even the score.

The second quarter got underway with an interception of Snead by Erich Barnes. Tittle drove the Giants down the field on passes to Shofner, and then hit former Redskins tight end Joe Walton for a four-yard touchdown. Snead countered with another drive and touchdown pass, although Sam Huff blocked the extra point to retain a one-point New York lead. Another long pass to Shofner took the Giants to the Washington 4-yard line, and Tittle’s two-yard pass to Joe Morrison right before the half was his third touchdown pass of the day.

On the first play of the second half, Snead got the Redskins back in the game with an 80-yard bomb to Mitchell, but the Giants took complete control of the game on the ensuing posession. Five straight
