Blake Lively’s Perfect Red Lip Rouge Dior

As far as lipsticks go, one name that’s both classic and cool is Rouge Dior, with the august French house launching the first iteration way back in 1953. The secret behind its longevity: Change. Expect the unexpected, with new variants to offer what women want at different points (and trends) in time. Amid lipsticks shifting from traditional swivel-up bullets to swipe-on liquid formulas, the house feted its first liquid lipstick with a launch party in Tokyo. ELLE took the opportunity to hobnob with Dior muse Natalie Portman and creative and image director Peter Philips.

MULTIPLE CHOICE Rouge Dior Liquid stands out because it isn’t just one formula with one finish. Most liquid lipstick lines offer a range of colours in a single finish – think matte, sheer, patent or metallic – but this has an impressive buffet of some 20-strong shades across three different finishes. “We worked hard to come up with the different textures because I wanted to give women more choice,” explains Philips, adding that Rouge Dior Liquid comes in matte, satin and metal finishes.

Here’s where it’s stands out even more – the matte shades include some surprises like Black Matte, Oxblood Matte (a reddish black) and Hectic Matte (a deep blackish purple). So edgy. The richly pigmented Satin shades lend a soft sheen that are likely to appeal to most lippie fans, while party-ready Metal hues go beyond standard shimmer into full-on blinding territory. As Philips says, while playing with some of the shades on the back of his hand, “It was important for Dior to push the boundaries to reinvent itself and to give women the range to express themselves.”
