We all know that baking in the sun for hours on end is bad for our skin. Not only do UVA rays make us look older by causing wrinkles and age spots, but UVB rays can lead to skin cancer. But the thought of faking your glow can be just as angst-inducing; the streaks, the patches, the orange tint… Eeek! Never fear – just follow these steps and you’ll master the trick to a flawless faux glow in no time.

Top tip!

The trick to a natural-looking tan is in what you do before you even pick up the self-tanner; you need a smooth base for the tan so exfoliate to remove dead skin cells – try Sorbet Smoothing Body Scrub, R45. Shaving has a similar effect to exfoliation, so should be done at least 24 hours before tanning (waxing should be done 48 hours beforehand). Moisturise an hour or so before applying tanner, and pay extra attention to the dry areas like elbows and ankles.

One of the biggest giveaways of a sunless tan is orange palms. The solution? Using a tanning mitt like the Skinny Tan Tanning Mitt, R125. After tanning, you can remove the mitt and wipe the back of your hands on your lower back so you get a tint of colour on them without using your palms.

Grab your tanner – we love Caribbean Tan Bronzing Mousse Self Tan, R99,95 – and start with your legs; if you start with your torso you’ll have to bend to do your bottom half which can cause a ‘crease’ in the tan. Place your leg on the edge of the bath and work the tan down to the toes. Don’t be a nervous tanner – too little product on a large area like your legs will lead to streaks, so slather it on to get an even finish. Ease up on your joints, though, to avoid dark patches.

Now you need to be a bit patient – your skin should be touch dry before you get dressed (throw on something lightweight like a beach cover-up), and allow 4 to 8 hours before getting wet. Extend the life of your tan by applying California Tan Extend Post Spray, R299,95, every few days.

Don’t worry, mistakes can be fixed. Scrub stained hands with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, rinse, then use an oil-based body scrub to buff dry skin. Then jump in the shower to rinse off.
