Gucci Fall 2019 Ready-to-Wear Collection

It went beyond gilt laurel wreaths. Michele’s mastery of drape, cut, colour, embellishment and of marrying seemingly diverse influences showed up best in beautiful gowns. An otherwise plain long-sleeved dress transformed into a classical Greek confection courtesy of clever black sequinned trompe l’oeil “drapes”. A sheer black gown with gold sequinned strips got a goddess disco-perfect. Finally, a lavender and pink number with its flowing cape and diamante bows at the neck, bodice and waist evoked the glamour of Fifties screen sirens.

Crystal embroidered velvet torchons on necklines, cuffs and trims were no afterthought. A high level of craftsmanship was required to create these – the velvet strips had to be twisted and embroidered by hand in order to achieve the correct proportions.

Shimmering brocade ensembles, plush jacquard frocks, mouthwatering chocolate-hued suede (or sequinned) capes trimmed with mink cuffs, notto-be-missed Medici-worthy balloon sleeves in monogram canvas on a bomber jacket, as well as pearls dripping from turbans, clothing and his maiden army’s manes. Everything was exuberant about Michele’s uberexcessive modern-day take on the Italian Renaissance.

Gucci’s sexy sensibilities has been refreshed by Michele’s witty subversive streak. By infusing elements from subcultures like rock and punk, he conceived slim-cut dandy-esque suits in vivid prints, fringed moto jackets, floral-embroidered plaid, leather shorts, acid-washed denim jeans, and loud logo tees.
The sleepwear-as-outerwear trend Michele has perfected into a Gucci signature over recent seasons remained an important silhouette. And the brighter they were, the better. Will it be a classic pajama top awash in tropical prints paired with matching Bermuda shorts for you, or an outsized floral print cardigan jacket over loose pants? For a study in colour clashing, he even sent out a Nehru-collar tunic in Oriental prints of green and purple worn with roomy high-waisted trousers in hues of blue and orange – belted with a pink sash, no less!

Modern, imaginative and multifaceted, Gucci’s handbags for the season married vintage charm with a sprinkling of exotic. Leading the line-up was the Ophidia, which features the iconic inlayed web detail and a shiny gold GG Marmont tab. It is available in two shapes: One is crafted like a beauty case and comes with a chain strap; the other into a dome with an adjustable leather strap. There was also the GucciTotem, a soft, lightweight arm candy adorned with iconic elements including the web stripe, and embellishments such as enamelled butterflies. Its variety of styles, sizes and materials answers every woman’s wide-ranging style needs, ranging from practical to polished.
