K Naomi Noinyane

My first reaction was shock. It was unexpected a blessing. I’ve always dreamt of working with a beauty brand that represents the type of woman I worked hard to become. Maybelline encompasses exactly that.

YOU’RE ALSO THE HOST FOR THE YOUTUBE SERIES GLOSS IN THE CITY.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE EPISODE?

All the episodes so far have had different aspects that I’ve loved. There have been exclusive interviews with some of the coolest celebrities in South African entertainment, including TV personalities, trendsetters, bloggers and dancers. It’s fresh and it’s different – and it makes you want to make anything you put your mind to doing happen.

YOU METGIGI HADID AND ADRIANA LIMA IN NEW YORK. WHAT ARE THEY LIKE IRL? GIVE US THE SCOOP!

I thought that being around two beautiful global supermodels would be intimidating — but the experience was far from that. Adriana was super-cool; she even gave me suggestions on how to take pics of the two of us together so we both look good in them. Her vibe makes you forget that she’s one of the biggest models in the world – that’s how humble she is.

Gigi is witty and down-to-earth. She has a realness to her. She speaks her mind and she does what she wants – which is very similar to me.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SUMMER MAKEUP TREND?

Highlighter will be trending for a very long time.

In summer I don’t wear a lot of makeup, so it’s like a perfect cherry on top that makes me look effortlessly good. My fave is Maybelline Master Chrome – it’s so bomb, and it looks amazing on every skin tone!

THREE BEAUTY MUST-HAVES YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT THIS SUMMER?

• Sunscreen – because I’m big on protecting my skin.

• A pair of good shades – perhaps with vintage frames, from Gigi’s Vogue Eyewear range.

• A nude lipstick because it works with any look.

FAVOURITE OUT-THERE INSTA BEAUTY TREND?

Definitely thick eyebrows that pop. I love eyebrows – and big eyebrows are a big deal for me because I can rock them with or without makeup.

YOUR DAY VS NIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINE?

My day routine includes a lot of water, and my night routine is simply good sleep. I don’t use any special facial products – just a bar of soap to make sure my face is clean, and H20 to hydrate.

A friend to create awesome memories with, headphones to listen to music and comfortable sneakers to see the place you travelled to.

YOUR HAPPIEST MOMENT THIS YEAR?

I have a grandmother who’s amazing and supportive. She’s 89. She helped my mother raise me. Seeing her smile is my happy moment; it beats everything else. When she found out that I had graduated, she said, ‘Your mother is definitely proud.’ Having her acknowledge my hard work and growth means the world to me.

I believe my mom’s spirit lives on through her.

I honestly don’t know anything better than the era I live in right now. I wouldn’t choose any other.

WHEN YOU’RE ON THE VERGE OF A MELTDOWN, THE FIRST PERSON YOU CALL IS…

My older sister. I love her to bits. I can be very honest with her about everything, and not feel as though I’m being judged.

AND THE BEST ADVICE SHE’S GIVEN YOU IS.

‘Just do you – and be great!’

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS IN 2017?

f”‘y Reebok ambassador deal (I’m the first African woman to work with Reebok), being a Maybelline ‘Global It Girl’, my Vogue Eyewear V-side campaign and, of course, my first COSMO cover. Everything this year has had a ‘first’ to it. I’ve made so many sacrifices during the past few years, and things are finally unfolding.

YOU STARTED OUT AS A MODEL. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BREAK, AND WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MODELS?

I got my first modelling job after a casting for the ‘face’ of Palmolive. Unfortunately, being a model started to clash with my TV work, so I had to choose one to focus on. The modelling industry needs commitment and patience; the gigs won’t always come, but keep knocking on doors and attending castings. I used to think my height would let me down but I actually won l-.’bs over taller models.

YOU JUST FINISHED A BCOM DEGREE IN BRAND BUILDING AND MANAGEMENT. WHAT

I sacrificed work to study full time and get my degree. We need to make sacrifices in life, and as much as they may seem difficult, in the long run it’s all worth it. When you know what you want, you do whatever you have to to make it happen.

I chose getting an education over my career. Now I have a degree that allows me to Invest in a secure future, and I use what I’ve learnt to better my brand.

Avoiding student debt? Cut down on unnecessary costs. Save money, so you can use your own money and not have to get a loan.

Reckless spending will make you regret not saving. .Revising for exams and staying focused?

If your goal is to get a degree, just do the right thing. It really is all up to you – what you put in is what you get out. Everyone has to find a method that works for them, but cutting down on social media and your social life for a short period will help you focus on the books.

YOU’VE BEEN A PRESENTER ON BET AFRICA, TOP TV, ETV AND CHANNEL O. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE CAMERA?

I can’t explain my love for the camera. To some people it seems crazy.

I’ve been through a lot in life, and I’ve realised that when I’m on screen I forget the hard times. That’s why I love being in front of the camera – it’s a passion that has become a comfort zone.

WHAT PERSONALITY TRAITS DO YOU NEED TO MAKE IT IN ENTERTAINMENT?

You need confidence, and to bring a unique style that represents you. Everyone has a different journey – enjoy yours and focus only on that. I believe in just being yourself.

DREAM PERSON TO INTERVIEW?

Naomi Campbell. She has a strong personality that I truly admire, and I would love to find out how she became so iconic.

I really respect her and her work ethic. She’s not perfect, but she stays strong and focuses on just being better.

WHAT DOES #ADULTING MEAN TO YOU?

It means growing up, taking on responsibilities, and understanding more about life and yourself.

Squats! They really work. I’ve been exercising hard for the past few years, and I’ve seen the results of sticking to a regimen.

YOUR WEEKLY WORKOUT ROUTINE?

I do 15 to 30 minutes of intense boxing per day. I include cardio and weight workouts because my goal is to gain muscle, not lose weight.
