Recorded in Louisiana with producer Mike Zito this album showcases the sheer professionalism and musical maturity of this still-young British talent
With his brilliant guitar solos and compelling vocals, Laurence Jones continues to impress on TEMPTATION, his second album. Other artists may have more miles on the clock but this twenty-something band leader from Warwickshire demonstrates that he can hold his own with such greats as guitarists Walter Trout and Aynsley Lister who appear on this Louisiana-recorded album – along with Charlie Wooton (bass), Yonrico Scott (drums), Lewis Stephens (Hammond), Johnny Sandstone (harmonica) plus producer Mike Zito on acoustic guitar and piano. Powerful blues influences are at work tinged with some American country plus there’s sometimes a retro rock ‘n’ roll feel, too. The energy throughout is stunning and each track is memorable.
I especially enjoyed Tomorrow Is Another Day featuring a great combination of guitar and harmonica pi us Southern Breeze with its immaculate slide guitar and perfect percussion. I also admired the vocals, wild guitar work and solid rhythm section on Bad Bad Dream and the final track Soul Swamp River features a nice combination of strong bass work with harp and guitar.
So, all-in-all,TEMPTATION is a powerful second album – and it marks another positive step forwards in Laurence Jones’s already impressive musical journey. Nick Dent-Robinson
