The event drew a famous crowd, including Reese Witherspoon, who won the Hollywood Hero Award, and Caitlyn Jenner, who was there to collect a Transgender Champion Award (see page 104). Victoria later poked fun at her reputation for being notoriously straight-faced, by sharing a picture of her looking happy as she collected her award (previous page), quipping: â˜Yes she smiled! I’m happy. X vb.’ Victoria, 41, and Brooklyn had flown in to New York from the UK the day before, and that morning she appeared on chat show Good Morning America to discuss her nomination, looking happy and confident in a fitted black dress with thick tasselled hem.
Speaking about her huge influence as a celebrity, Victoria admitted: â˜It took me getting to 40 years old to realise I have a powerful voice. People will listen to what I say, for whatever reason. â˜This [Glamour Award] means an enormous amount to me. I love to support and empower women and that’s the message tonight.’ She also touched on the best advice she’d been given, saying it came from fellow fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, who told her to forgive herself for being a busy mum. â˜I’m sure there are lots of women right now who are thinking, I feel guilty. I’ve got kids and I’m going to work.
Actually, it is a positive message to be given to your children and to other women and children as well.’ Later that day, Victoria and Brooklyn were spotted leaving their New York hotel, with Victoria wearing a pair of grey tweed culottes and a matching sleeveless top. Showing that he’s adopted his dad’s love of footwear, the pair headed to sport store Flight Club, where Brooklyn splashed out on five pairs of trainers. But there was no hanging around in the Big Apple, as the mother and son were straight back to the airport the day after the awards to catch a flight home, with Victoria hiding her eyes behind a large pair of square sunglasses, and Brooklyn acting the perfect gent as he held doors open for his mum. What a whirlwind 48 hours!
